Since the last newsletter, the AMZ Driverless team made a lot of progress on gotthard’s autonomous system, attended race camps, showed presence at a public event, and competed in their first Formula Student competition.

Perhaps most significantly, «gotthard» driverless competed in its first competition on 11-15 July 2018, namely Formula SAE Italy in Varano de Melegari.

The competition started with scrutineering, where judges inspect the the mechanical, electrical and autonomous systems of the cars.  On day two it was time for statics, starting with cost. The cost event allows the team to explain to the judges the manufacturing processes and the costs involved in producing a quality racing car. Next the business event took place; a great chance to enhance marketing skills for anyone who would want to start their own company. Afterwards the moment came for the design vent. All team members were armed with their design folders, in order to present their design concepts and supporting material to the judges. Day three and the wheels are rolling! The first dynamic discipline was acceleration, followed by skidpad. The last day of dynamic disciplines for the driverless teams ended with trackdrive, where «gotthard» completed 10 laps of an unknown track.

The results were very positive for AMZ driverless, finishing first in all dynamic as well as static disciplines, and receiving a special award for Driving Safety.

AMZ was priviledged to be present at the Formula E event in Zurich on 10 June 2018, when circuit racing returned to Switzerland for the first time in 60 years. This was a great opportunity for all the Swiss motorsport enthusiasts. AMZ was lucky enough to be able to showcase three of their cars to the motorsport fans: «flüela», «gotthard» and «pilatus».

AMZ Driverless was eager to attend the Norelem racecamp on 20 and 21 June 2018. The racecamp provided the team a platform to prepare for both the static and dynamic events of a Formula Student competition and also gave the opportunity to socialise with the other teams. Norelem organised design, business and cost events to give the teams valuable feedback to be even better at future events.

With the final event around the corner, Formula Student Germany on 6-12 August, the autonomous system has reached a design freeze, meaning that the code will be finalized so that it can be tested rigorously and tuned for performance.
