After months of conceptual development, the last few weeks have been marked by implementations and tests directly on the vehicle. flüela has completed the modifications to an autonomous car and already successfully completed several testing kilometers.
However, the road to a reliable and fast autonomous performance is full of challenges

Turning wheels

April 29 2:30 pm - The team gathers around flüela. After months of preparation, the first autonomous ride will take place. The bolide accelerates slowly and begins to follow the computed path. The steering column is activated reliably, so that flüela seems to change its heading magically. The developed foundation works, the first major milestone of the project is achieved! That a flawless functionality is not guaranteed is experienced at the rollout. After a last flawless test on the grounds of the EKZ in Dietikon, the bad luck creeps in. Shortly before the first public drive, a broken cable in the accumulator disrupts the plans. At the subsequent aperitif in an exclusive ambience the slightly worn out mood of the team brightened up again.

A look behind the algorithms

The foundation of these achievements is thousands of lines of code and even more hours of development work. The environment detection is built upon the inertial stereo camera system and the LiDAR. The first is a highly precise synchronized unit consisting of two cameras and an acceleration sensor. It enables a reliable three-dimensional representation of the environment. Therein, objects such as cones are recognized and utilized as information in a position relative to the vehicle.
